Syphilis and DoxyPEP: Update 28 July2025

DoxyPEP is an antibiotic that can be taken after sex to help prevent syphilis.

Who it’s for and how to get it

DoxyPEP is recommended for some people at an increased risk of getting syphilis. It’s available for free from some sexual health clinics.

Talk to a healthcare professional at a sexual health service if you think you may benefit from DoxyPEP.

When to take it

It’s usually recommended to take it within 24 hours after potentially being exposed to syphilis during sex. It should not be taken any later than 72 hours after sex.

Important information

DoxyPEP refers to the antibiotic Doxycycline. Any other type of antibiotic is unlikely to be effective at preventing syphilis.

Always check with a healthcare professional before taking Doxycycline or any other antibiotic, especially if you take other medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Your healthcare professional can:

  • Check if Doxycycline is OK for you
  • Give you information on how to take it and possible side effects
  • Talk to you about the possible benefits and risks of DoxyPEP
  • Talk to you about anything that might make DoxyPEP less effective
