Key messages on contraception choices

Lesson 3: Making the choice

Key messages on contraception choices

  • There are a range of contraceptive choices available to fit with people’s lifestyles and medical needs.
  • Sexual health clinics and GPs can help young people to make these decisions – including answering questions about different contraceptives.
  • Some contraceptives can have other effects than preventing pregnancy, like stopping periods or make them lighter, which some people may find helpful.
  • For someone with painful or heavy periods, contraceptives like the copper IUD (coil) may not be the best option as they can make the bleeding and cramps worse.
