• A period is the part of the menstrual cycle when a woman (or trans man or non-binary person) bleeds from their vagina for a few days.

• The blood that comes down is the uterine lining that has built up throughout the menstrual cycle. The average cycle length is 28 days, but it can range from 21 to 35 for adults and 21 to 40 days for teenagers. Day 1 is the first day of bleeding.
• The average blood loss in a period is about 20 to 90ml (about 1 to 5 tablespoons) , although some women bleed more heavily than this.
