- If someone has an instance of unprotected sex, they should seek help from sexual health services.
- This should be within 5 days of the instance of unprotected sex, but preferably as soon as possible.
There are two options for emergency contraception:
- The emergency contraceptive pill (morning after pill) which delays an egg being released so it can’t be fertilised.
- The copper IUD (coil) which makes the uterus (womb) inhospitable to sperm and an egg, and prevents a fertilised egg from being able to implant itself into the lining of the uterus.
