Key messages on contraception choices - Family Planning Association

Lesson 2: Making the Choice

Key messages on contraception choices

  • There are a range of contraceptive choices available to fit with people’s lifestyles and medical needs.
  • Staff in sexual health services and doctors can help young people to make these decisions. They are there to help and can answer questions about different contraceptives.
  • Some contraceptives can have other effects than preventing pregnancy, like stopping periods or make them lighter, which some people may find helpful.
  • For someone with painful or heavy periods, contraceptives like the copper coil may not be the best option as they can make the bleeding and cramps worse.
