Key messages on emergency contraception - part 2 - Family Planning Association

Lesson 2: Making the Choice

Key messages on emergency contraception – part 2

  • The emergency contraceptive pill is only effective if taken before ovulation.
  • This does not prevent pregnancy for the rest of the same menstrual cycle, so other contraception is still needed.
  • If emergency contraception is needed after ovulation, then the copper coil is the only option. The same copper coil can be left in as long-term contraception or can be removed by a medical professional.
  • Sometimes working out the date of ovulation can feel complicated. Sexual health services can help with this if someone isn’t sure.
  • It’s advised to take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after unprotected sex, even if someone has taken emergency contraception.
