- The emergency contraceptive pill is only effective if taken before ovulation.
- This does not prevent pregnancy for the rest of the same menstrual cycle, so other contraception is still needed.
- If emergency contraception is needed after ovulation, then the copper coil is the only option. The same copper coil can be left in as long-term contraception or can be removed by a medical professional.
- Sometimes working out the date of ovulation can feel complicated. Sexual health services can help with this if someone isn’t sure.
- It’s advised to take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after unprotected sex, even if someone has taken emergency contraception.
