Key messages on emergency contraception - part 1 - Family Planning Association

Lesson 2: Making the Choice

Key messages on emergency contraception – part 1

  • If someone has an instance of unprotected sex, they should seek help from sexual health services.
  • At the latest this should be within 5 days of the instance of unprotected sex, but preferably as soon as possible.

There are two options for emergency contraception:

  • The emergency contraceptive pill (or morning after pill) which delays an egg being released so it can’t be fertilised.
  • The copper coil which makes the uterus inhospitable to sperm and an egg, and prevents a fertilised egg from being able to implant itself into the lining of the uterus.
