Key messages on contraception – Family Planning Association

Lesson 1: Introduction to contraception

Key messages on contraception

  • Barrier methods like condoms can prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. No other form of contraception can prevent STIs.
  • Hormonal methods can be used at the same time as barrier methods to further prevent pregnancy.
  • Withdrawal or “pulling out” is not an effective or reliable form of contraception because sperm can be in the pre-ejaculate (the clear liquid that comes out of the penis before a full ejaculation happens).
  • Doctors and sexual health services can help people to choose appropriate contraception, including emergency contraception if there is a risk of pregnancy.

Are there any other important points you think young people should know?
