Key messages on contraception - Family Planning Association

Lesson 1: Exploring the Options

Key messages on contraception

  • Barrier methods like the condom can prevent pregnancy and STIs. No other form of contraception can prevent STIs.
  • Hormonal methods can be used at the same time as barrier methods to prevent pregnancy.
  • Withdrawal or “pulling out” is not an effective or reliable form of contraception because sperm can be in the pre-ejaculate.
  • Doctors and sexual health services can help people to choose appropriate contraception, including emergency contraception if there is a risk of pregnancy.
