Sexual health charity FPA welcomes the comments from Irish Minister for Health Simon Harris, echoing the Irish Government’s stance, that he intends to ensure women from Northern Ireland can access abortion services in the Republic, “just like they can access other health services [there]”.

While this is welcome, it is still no substitute for much needed and long overdue reform in Northern Ireland. With potential 72 hour waiting periods and issues regarding costs, women may still be forced to travel to England or to continue with an unplanned or crisis pregnancy.

Pregnant people in Northern Ireland deserve access to abortion services in their home county and FPA continues to call for free, safe and legal healthcare rights there.
