What are wet dreams?

When puberty begins, the testicles start to make millions of sperm every day. Sperm can fertilise an egg during sex to make a pregnancy.

Ejaculation is when a small amount of semen (creamy fluid that contains sperm) is squirted out of the erect penis. Sometimes this happens when you’re sleeping and is called a wet dream.

Can I tell you something… And you promise not to laugh?

Yeah, you know you can talk to me about anything.

I think I wet the bed this morning… My boxers were kinda wet and sticky.

Oh, that sounds like you had a wet dream.

What’s a wet dream?

Wet dreams are when a thing called semen comes out of your penis. They happen at night when you’re sleeping.

Really!? How will I know I’ve had one?

Just like this morning… You’ll have a wet sticky patch on your boxers or PJs and maybe even the sheets.

So I haven’t wet the bed?

No…. You haven’t wet the bed. It’s totally normal.

The actual term for wet dreams, which a doctor or health professional may use, is nocturnal emissions. Nocturnal means at night. Emission means to release. They’re also sometimes called ‘sleep orgasms’.

How will I know if I have a wet dream?

When you wake up you may notice a wet patch on your bed sheets.

Or you notice that your underwear or pyjamas are wet and sticky. You may think you’ve peed the bed, but it’s actually a small amount of semen. You’ll have had an erection when you were asleep, and semen has been ejaculated (released) from your penis.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a wet dream.

It’s a normal part of growing up and you can’t stop them from happening. Never feel embarrassed, ashamed or guilty.
