Pride and prejudice: working with LGB and T young people

“One of the best courses I’ve been on in a long time.”
Course participant, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea

Young people discovering and coming to terms with their sexuality are doing so at a difficult, emotional time in their lives. Young people discovering that they are (or might be) lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGB and T) need extra support and acceptance to counteract feelings of alienation, exclusion, isolation and sometimes condemnation.

Almost 65 per cent of young lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils have experienced direct bullying at school and 98 per cent of young gay people hear the phrases “that’s so gay” or “you’re so gay” in school.

Over half of lesbian and gay pupils don’t feel able to be themselves at school and 35 per cent of gay pupils do not feel safe or accepted at school.

Organisations need to look at strategies and skills to promote an inclusive environment within the workplace. Youth workers, teachers, health professionals – anyone working with young people – can develop the confidence and skills to ensure that LGB and T young people get the support, care and information they need.
