FPA flagship course for youth workers gets a ministerial launch

12 April 2007

fpa's flagship course for professionals Core Competencies in Sexual Health for Youth Workers is being officially launched at the House of Lords on the 24 April by the Rt Hon Beverley Hughes MP, Minister for Children, Young People and Families.

The university accredited course is the only one of its kind. Developed in association with The National Youth Agency it equips professionals working with young people, with the knowledge and skills recognised as being essential to work proficiently when dealing with sexual health issues. It is available nationally and designed for any professional working in this area.

Anne Weyman, Chief Executive, fpa said: “We are thrilled that the Minister has agreed to launch the Core Competencies course which will set the standard for this type of work. There are many professionals working with young people and sexual health. Despite some excellent, innovative practice, prior to fpa's new course there were few opportunities for them to gain professional recognition in such a specialised field.

“Because of the nature of the course, Core Competencies is relevant for professionals whether they have been involved in this work for many years or a few months. Accreditation by the University of Staffordshire also means that their hard work will be acknowledged at degree level.”

Tom Wylie, Chief Executive, The National Youth Agency said: “We are in a time of rapid change for young people's services, and anything which enables young people to access youth workers with the skills and knowledge to deal with sexual health issues is to be very much welcomed. These competencies which fpa have produced with The NYA will help to ensure an integrated and up to date workforce at the points of greatest need, and beyond.”

The course runs for seven days and starts in September 2007. Prices start from £600, anyone interested should contact fpa.
