Remembering FPA in your will is a significant way to support our work. And it costs you nothing now. All you need to do is decide to leave us something in your will. It would be helpful if you let us know as it helps us plan for the future. You can change your will at any time.
If you leave us a legacy you will be helping to educate and support future generations about such important issues.
Why make a will?
Making a will allows you to leave gifts to the people and causes that were important to you during your lifetime. It is also the only way to make sure that your wishes are carried out after your death.
Without a valid will, it is possible that your entire estate could be shared among relatives you have never met or even the Crown. Even if you are married, living with a partner or have children, it is wrong to assume that they will automatically inherit your estate when you die.
Charitable legacies are exempt from inheritance tax so all of your gift will go towards our work while at the same time you could substantially reduce the amount of tax payable on your estate. Inheritance tax is deducted from your estate when your will is proved. Ask a solicitor to advise you.
What to do next
First decide on the type of legacy you wish to leave to FPA. Essentially there are three main types:
- Residuary legacy – the remainder of your estate after all other bequests and expenses have been deducted.
- Cash (pecuniary) legacy – a specified amount of money, for example £5,000.
- Specific legacy – a specific item such as property, jewellery, shares or other valuables.
Then make sure your will includes our full name, registered office address and our registered charity number:
Family Planning Association, 23-28 Penn Street, London N1 5DL
Registered charity number 250187
We strongly recommend you speak to a solicitor. Please note that making changes directly onto your will can invalidate the whole document and that the wording of bequests may differ in Scotland.
Finally, please write to us at the above address, just to let us know. Thank you.
