Sexual health and relationships education for vulnerable young people

The FPA Jiwsi project delivers innovative sexual health and relationships education in community settings to groups of vulnerable young people.

Why this project is needed

Vulnerable young people often miss out on sex and relationships education (SRE) that meets their needs.

They are at increased risk of unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections or other sexual health problems.

Who we help

Jiwsi works with groups of young people, under 25 years old, who live in North Wales and are identified as being vulnerable and at increased risk of sexual health problems now or in the future.

This includes (but isn't limited to):

  • Looked after children (LAC) and young people who are about to leave or who have left care.
  • Young people with physical or learning disabilities.
  • Young people with behavioural problems.
  • Socially disadvantaged young people.
  • Rurally isolated young people.
  • Young offenders.
  • Minority ethnic groups, including young refugees and travellers.
  • Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) young people.
  • Homeless young people.
  • Young people with mental health issues.
  • Young people who have been or are at risk of being abused or abusing others.
  • Young parents.
What people have said about Jiwsi
“Jiwsi is a consistently high quality example of how SRE should be delivered to everyone, and demonstrates a commitment to working with vulnerable young people.”
Service Commissioner in North Wales

How we work

We run developmental programmes of sex and relationships education (SRE) concentrating on issues identified by young people.

Popular topics include the difference between public and private behaviour, safer sex and developing healthy relationships.

Project outcomes

  • Programmes of sexual health and relationships education are carried out in community-based settings.

  • Young people are familiarised with local sexual health and contraceptive services when appropriate.

  • Accredited training in core competencies in sexual health for youth workers is provided.

Who we work with

  • Practitioners and organisations can contact Jiwsi to discuss us delivering SRE to groups of young people.

  • We are happy to meet with groups of parents to discuss the work that Jiwsi does with children and young people.

  • We offer training and support to practitioners who want to deliver high quality SRE.

Jiwsi for professionals

Jiwsi trains and supports professionals to run safe and practical sex and relationships sessions with young people.

We also run the Jiwsi Network for professionals. This popular network offers regular support via meetings, seminars and email updates to practitioners delivering SRE in North Wales.

Free Jiwsi activity book

Jiwsi staff have produced a bilingual book of activities used and developed within the Jiwsi project – A Pick ‘n’ Mix of Sex and Relationships Education Activities.

Groups who have worked with Jiwsi can request a free copy of the book from melanieg@fpa.org.uk or you can download your own free Jiwsi PDF in Welsh and English.
