The FPA Sexability project helps young people in west and central Scotland make informed choices about sexual health and relationships.

The 2005 Respect and Responsibility sexual health strategy in Scotland recognised that promoting positive sexual health is a key public health issue. Wider economic, cultural and social influences, particularly social disadvantage and early initiation into sexual activity, can contribute to poor sexual health if they are not addressed.
Young people can find it difficult to navigate decisions they need to make about their sexual health and relationships. To feel confident in making informed choices, they need accurate information about sexual health and a safe space to explore and discuss their decisions.
Sexability is for groups of young people aged 11–18.
We work with young people in mainstream education as well as vulnerable young people, such as those with emotional or behavioural difficulties, young carers and those with substance misuse issues.
We deliver the project across west and central Scotland including in rural areas and places with high social deprivation.
The Sexability course can be delivered in a variety of settings, including schools, youth groups and community organisations.
We run one-off sessions and six session courses for groups of young people. Sessions cover a wide range of sexual health and relationships topics, including contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy choices, relationships, sexuality and pornography.
We also tell young people how to access sexual health and other relevant services.
Our Sexability team can deliver training for professionals. This equips them with the skills needed to deliver Sexability sessions to young people.
Training can be adapted to suit the particular needs of an organisation. Topics that can be covered include:
We work with young people to:
increase their knowledge and understanding of sexual health
encourage their use of local sexual health services
equip them with skills, knowledge and confidence to negotiate their sexual health and relationships.
Sexability is funded by Scottish Government.
