“Brilliant course, giving me the opportunity to empathise with clients’ feelings and think about my role.”
Training course participant

This is a one-day course for the people on the front line of primary care including reception and administration staff working in surgeries, contraception or genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinics. Reception staff have a key role to play in providing a non-judgemental, confidential and sensitive sexual health service, especially to young people. Yet very few front-line workers are offered ongoing training and development in sexual health issues. The NHS plan and The national strategy for sexual health and HIV both emphasise the role that education and training play in equipping everyone working in the field to provide good quality sexual health services. This includes those who have a clinical/medical qualification, as well as those who do not.

This course seeks to enable front-line staff to develop those skills necessary for working in reception and for providing a good quality sexual health service. This course uses the 'You're welcome' quality criteria throughout.

Aim

To further develop the confidence of reception staff in dealing with clients presenting with sexual health issues in general practice, contraception clinics, GUM and other settings.

Learning outcomes

  • Create and maintain a welcoming environment for clients.
  • Demonstrate respect for privacy and confidentiality with clients.
  • Confidently work with clients within current law and guidance including 'You're welcome' quality criteria.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the difference between personal attitudes and professional practices.
  • Recognise and explain the boundaries and roles of team members.
