Responding to the recent Ofsted report on personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education in English schools which found that some children are not receiving good sex education, Julie Bentley, Chief Executive FPA said:

“Ofsted’s report reinforces what FPA and young people have been saying for many years that sex and relationships isn’t taught consistently or early enough in schools and focuses too much on biology. Consequently many young people miss out on SRE which is a vital part of their education.

Delivering SRE in the classroom is a highly skilled job and professionals need to be supported and trained to teach it. It’s not surprising that teachers, with no background in the subject naturally struggle with issues like embarrassment, which with the right training and support are easily overcome.”
