Abortion affects women in many different ways. Just as no two women are the same, neither are their reasons for having an abortion, the situation they find themselves in or the circumstances that led to them becoming pregnant in the first place. Here women share their unique and quite different experiences of abortion with us.

Abortion in Northern Ireland

All these stories are of real women who have presented themselves to the FPA unplanned pregnancy counselling service. Only their names have been changed.

Mary's story – Turned away by two separate hospitals, Mary travelled to London to end her pregnancy of a much wanted baby who was severely disabled.

Sarah's story – Already caring for a 16 week old baby, and living with her parents, Sarah and her boyfriend were at the point of desperate measures.

Petra's story – Petra originally from Poland, living and working alone in Northern Ireland, had no family friends or partner to turn to.

Magdelane's story – After reading our website Magdelane wrote to us with her story.
