What is PEP and can I take it?
PEP stands for post exposure prophylaxis and is a course of treatment that can prevent you from becoming infected by the HIV virus after you’ve been exposed to it.
What does it involve?
PEP involves taking anti-HIV drugs for four weeks and they must be started within 72 hours of the time you were possibly exposed to HIV. PEP is more effective the sooner you take it.
In what circumstances would PEP be recommended?
PEP is only recommended in certain circumstances.
If you think you have taken a risk and want to assess whether you are eligible for PEP you can answer the questions on the following online self assessment.
If you are worried that you have been exposed to HIV in the last 72 hours you can go to a genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic, a sexual health clinic or an accident and emergency unit.
